Breeding of Longhaired Cavies

These Cavies are a coated breed which means when being judged the majority of the points awarded with be for the coat, other features such as ears eyes etc will carry only minimum points. It is therefore Important the coated variety are breed to maintain the breed standard of the coat.

The rule of breeding Longhaired Cavies is to ensure you only breed animals who's coat flows in the same direction. This ensures you do not produce a cross breed (Pet) and retain the breed standard.

For example :

Peruvian: The coat flows from rump to head and is smooth.

Alpaca: The coat again flows from rump to head as with the Peruvian but is wavy.

Alpaca and Peruvian cavies can be breed  together as there coats flow forward over the body. Crossing these two cavies will produce alpaca and peruvian young depending on the dominant gene in the parents.

Coronet, Sheltie, Texel & Merino: This group of cavies can be breed together as there coat flows backward across the body. I will break down the differences between the four breeds.

Sheltie : From the Sheltie you can produce the other three variations of coat type. of Merino, Texel & Coronet. The sheltie coat flows from head to rump and is smooth, there should be no rosettes or crests visable.

Coronet: This is a Sheltie with a crest. The coat again as with the Sheltie should be Smooth and flow from head to rump.

Texel: The coat is the same as the Sheltie flowing from head to rump, There should be no Crest, The feature which separtes the Texel from the Sheltie is the coat is wavy and not smooth.

Merino: The Merino is a Texel with a crest, The coat as with the Texel will be wavy and flow from head to rump.

When breeding the Sheltie, Coronet, Texel & Merino your litters will produce any of the above variations, For example crossing Sheltie with Merino your litter could result in Coronets, Texels or even a sheltie or Merino. All will be pure breed it all depends on the dominant genes in the parents.

Mixing the Peruvian/Alpaca with the Shelties/Texels will only result in cross breed young and you will not produce the breed standard coats.
